He has several years experience in pet transport to and from the UAE and has won an award from British Airways for his efforts. He can be reached by email only, due to his erratic office hours - late night trips to the airport, etc. his email address is pettravel@avcclinic.com.

To import a pet into the UAE you must have an import permit issued by the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water.

The following breeds or types of dogs are prohibited to be imported into UAE :

All Kinds Pit Bull.

Brazilian Fighting Dog (Fila Brasileino; Brazilian Mastiff).
Cross Breeds with extract of the above listed breeds.

American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Veterinary Clinic is able to obtain this document on your behalf.   To process this permit we require the following documents and information.

  1. A copy of the animal's vaccination book; containing the rabies vaccination and the combination/annual vaccinations. (The Rabies vaccination should be older than 30 days but younger than one year.)
  2. Microchip number; the microchip should be ISO standardised and able to be read by an ISO standard reader.
  3. Some countries require a "Rabies Serum Neutralization Test" (Rabies Titer Test) before travel. Click here for a list of countries that are except.

  4. Full details of the pet; date of birth, sex, colour, breed, etc.
  5. Copy of importers passport and UAE residence visa, if available.
  6. Address and phone number in the UAE and country of origin.
  7. Payment; we require a 50% deposit in advance.   The balance can be paid upon completion of services.

It will take 3 ministry working days to process the import permit; the ministry is closed Friday and Saturday.   The validity of this permit is 30 days from the date of issue.   In order to clear your pet at customs you will need the original import permit along with the original vaccination records and ministry health certificate (from the country of origin).

We offer the following options for the collection of the import permit:

  1. You can use our full service, which includes; processing the import permit, collecting your pet from the airport upon arrival, clearing customs and the veterinary department, delivering your pet to your home in Abu Dhabi.
  2. We can process the import permit and you can arrange for someone to collect it from the clinic and meet you at the airport.   You will have to make your own arrangements to clear customs at the cargo terminal.   Note, it normally takes two to three hours to clear customs after the flight has landed.
  3. We can courier the permit to you before you depart so you will have it with you when you arrive.   We have an account with FedEx and all costs will be added to your total bill.

Payment for the second two options must be made in advance of the import permit leaving our clinic.   You may pay over the phone using your credit card.   Note: there is a 30aed administration fee for this service.

e-dirham card:

You will need to pay 200aed to clear the veterinary department at the airport.   They only accept payment with an e-dirham card.   These cards are only available in the UAE, so we will provide this card credited with 200aed. There are other charges at each stage of the clearing process.   These will need to be paid in cash (aed).
