Frequently asked health questions

Why should I vaccinate my pet?

Vaccinations help to ensure the health and well being of your pets by significantly reducing the likelihood of your pet contracting the disease for which it is vaccinated. For more information please see vaccinations.

Why should I sterilize my pet?

Sterilization has many benefits from preventing unwanted pregnancy to reducing the risk of cancer.   Sterilization is one of the most important procedures your pet will ever need. For more information see sterilization.

Should I feed my pet dry food or wet food?

Both dry and wet foods have their advantages and disadvantages.   No single diet will be ideal for all pets.   Please consult with one of our doctors to determine what might be best for your pet.

How often should I health check my pet?

Your pet should have a health check every year. A health check every year for your pet is similar to you having a general check up every seven years.

How often should I deworm my pets and is heartworm a problem in the UAE?

You should deworm your pet every 3 - 6 months depending on their exposure. i.e. a dog that is constantly sniffing around in the undergrowth and has a tendency to eat or chew rubbish while on a walk should be dewormed more frequently than one that stays on the path and rarely picks up rubbish.   This applies to outdoor and indoor cats as well.   Heart worm is not a problem in the UAE so treatment is not regularly given, however for exporting purposes some countries require heartworm prevention be administered before entry is granted.

How often should I have a dental for my dog?

If your dog is enjoying a high quality dry diet then dentals should not be needed on a regular basis.   During your pet's annual health check the doctor will evaluate his/her teeth and will suggest a dental if one is deemed necessary.

Are there ticks in the UAE and how can I protect my dog?

Ticks are prevalent in the UAE and are notoriously difficult to control.   After walks you should check your dog for ticks; under the tail, armpits, between the paws and behind or under the ears should be given special attention.   Tick treatment/prevention option vary in terms of their efficacy - consult with our veterinary staff for the best treatment for your pet.

How can my indoor cat catch fleas?

Flea eggs can stay dormant until the conditions are right for hatching.   Humans can easily transfer them on their clothes and shoes.   Prevention is the best course of action.   Consult with our veterinary staff for the most effective course of treatment.
